Rocky Mountain High School is proud to invite you and your talented squad to our 2018 Speech and Debate Tournament! This year, on Friday the 2nd we will be offering all 14 IHSAA Speech events in an OPEN Division, and, on Saturday, the 3rd we will be offering Open and Novice divisions in Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum Debate. Saturday will ALSO offer an OPEN division of Congressional Debate and (new this year) an OPEN division of Big Questions Debate.

SPEECH

For the second year in a row, we are also excited to announce that we have been selected to offer NIETOC bids in DUO, HI, DI, OO and (new this year) INFORM as well as POI!!

*** ALL NIETOC BID EVENTS WILL BE GRANTED A 30 SECOND GRACE PERIOD IN ROUND!!!!

Less than 20 contestants -- First place receives a NIETOC bid

20-34 Contestants -- 1st, 2nd & 3rd place receive bids

35-50 Contestants -- Finals Round bid

All speech events will have 3 preliminary rounds and a finals round (provided the event reaches the 10-entry threshold). Contestants are permitted to double-enter in speech events unless one of the events is Panel, Radio, Extemp, or Retold Story.

EXTEMP TOPICS

We will be using the October AND November Extemp Topics.

PANEL TOPICS

  • Does giving extremist voices public platforms help or hurt public discourse?

  • How has the #MeToo Movement affected progress for Women’s Rights?

  • Has the legalization of Marijuana been good or bad for America?

  • Is the American Prison System effective at achieving its purpose?

 

DEBATE

Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Big Questions Debate, and Public Forum will have 4 preliminary rounds on Saturday and then break to either Quarters or Semifinals depending on the entry size. Congressional Debate will have 2 sessions using the DISTRICT 3 FALL PRELIMINARY DOCKET and then break to a Super Congress which will use the DISTRICT 3 FALL SUPERS DOCKET. Both dockets can be found HERE.

Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas will be using the NSDA November-December topics, Policy and Big Questions will be using the 2018-2019 NSDA topics, and Congress will use the D3 FALL DOCKET.

New to our tournament this year is Big Questions Debate. BQ offers the perfect opportunity for competitors to become interested in a rising debate format early in the competitive season. Those who finish in the top 4 in Big Questions at the Rocky Mountain Invitational are awarded free admission into the Rocky Mountain Big Questions tournament that we will be hosting December 15th.

 

COST/JUDGE REQUIREMENTS

Speech Events: $10 per speech entry

Debate Events: $10 for single entry events (LD, Congress, Big Questions)

Debate Events: $15 for partner events (CX, PF)

 

Judge Requirements:  1 for each 6 speech entries, 1 for each 4 LD, PF, or Big Questions entries, and 1 for each 2 CX entries.   

 

FOOD DRIVE

As is our annual tradition, the tournament will double as a food drive to help provide assistance to families in need during the holiday season. In place of a team fee, we ask that your team members bring 5 pounds of food PER ENTRY. We will be keeping track of the amount of food brought by each team and will award a trophy for the school that brings the most! Please help us make our community a healthier, happier place!
